Tropical Magdalena River, Antioquia´s Wild East & Coffee Region

Tour Info

This journey is the optimal mix of ecological and cultural elements. Discover Antioquia´s wild East with its countless crystal clear rivers and falls and learn about the moving history of this region. Visit Pablo Escobar´s former residence, enjoy the rain forest of Rio Claro, immerse yourself in the colonial past of Honda and the Magdalena river. In the mountains of the Central Andes, you will hike through the tropical rain forest of the national park Selva de Florencia and relax in idyllic hot springs in the midst of a picturesque green mountain landscape. Behind every curve, there is another breath-taking view of the Colombian Andes just waiting for you. Visit traditional coffee and sugar cane fincas and learn about the cultivation and processing of these two typical Colombian products. Experience amazing hospitality and find yourself in the traditional way of life of the locals.

Day 1: Northeast Antioquia: Guatape, Piedra del Peñol and San Rafael

On the first day of your roundtrip you will climb up the famous, 200 meters high Piedra del Peñol and visit the village of Guatape on the shores of an impressive reservoir. In the afternoon you will arrive at San Rafael. The idyllic village surrounded by tropical forest is a secret to most tourists. Solitary rivers and hidden falls in the midst of the jungle invite you to swim and the bush country lining the shores provides for countless outdoor activities. The first night you will spend at a charming finca hotel in San Rafael.

Day 2: Northeast Antioquia: San Carlos and San Luis

In the morning you will visit San Carlos, one of the villages of Antioquia affected by the inner conflict in the last decades. Here you will learn about the recent past, rebels, paramilitaries, and displacement, but above all you will also visit a village that has recovered in which the population lives in peace today. In the afternoon, you will drive on an unpaved road to San Luis. Passing by abandoned fincas and small valleys, you will traverse the mountains and arrive at San Luis, another touristic insider tip in Antioquia. Here you will spend the night at a pleasing family-run hotel.

Day 3: Northeast Antioquia: The Falls of San Luis and Rio Claro

The day begins with a short hike to the impressive La Planta waterfall and the Rio Dormilon which is one of the cleanest rivers in Colombia. Afterwards you will visit the powerful La Cuba falls that plunge into the valley in three stages. Then you leave San Luis in route to Rio Claro. The Rio Claro canyon with its huge marvel rocks is one of Colombia´s most beautiful landscapes and has been under protection since 1975. Relax on the picturesque shores of the Rio Claro and enjoy the amazing nature in the river´s canyon. You will spend the night at an ecolodge surrounded by tropical rain forest.

Day 4: History vs. Modern: Hacienda Napoles and the colonial Honda

On this day your journey will take you into the bizarre world of Hacienda Napoles, Pablo Escobar´s former residence. You will be guided through this historic place which has become Colombia´s biggest amusement park. There you will visit the Escobar museum in his former house and be left speechless by the remains of the megalomania and egomania of one of the most powerful drug lords the world has ever known. The park possesses a considerable population of exotic animals, amongst them the biggest hippo group outside of Africa. Escobar created a private zoo in the 1980s. In the afternoon you will continue your journey in the tropically hot lowlands of the Magdalena River valley and arrive in the early evening at the colonial town of Honda on the waterside of the Magdalena River. You will spend the night in a comfortable hotel colonial in the historic centre of Honda.

Day 5: From Tropical Magdalena Valley into the Central Andes

In the morning you will discover colonial Honda. This town played an important role in Colombian history. Once it had an important trading harbor on the Magdalena river. Goods were reloaded onto pack animals and taken over the mountains to the capital, Bogota. Afterwards you will continue to the evergreen mountains of the Central Andes. On a spectacular ride through picturesque landscapes you will enjoy breath-taking views. In the late afternoon you will arrive at the sleepy village of Florencia and the Selva de Florencia national park. You will spend the night at a friendly family-run hotel in Florencia.

Day 6: National Park Selva de Florencia: “… where Green becomes Water”

After breakfast you will go on a hike to the National Park accompanied by a local park ranger. On old, indigenous paths you will enter the jungle deeper and deeper, passing by crystal clear rivers and wooded hills. But this hike also illustrates the difficulties of the park rangers´ daily work to create, conserve and protect the park. Because the park is still very young, you have the unique opportunity to understand the regrowth of the rain forest. After lunch on the crystal clear Charco de San Lucas, you will continue the hike alongside the river and arrive at Florencia in the late afternoon. You will spend the night again in the family-run hotel in Florencia.

Day 7: Southeast Antioquia: Hot springs, picturesque landscapes and magical villages

On this day you will visit the crystal clear rivers of Rio Manso and Rio Samana and recover from yesterdays hike in the Espiritu Santo hot springs. In the afternoon you will visit the idyllic mountain village Nariño, called “Antioquia´s green balcony” by the locals. The journey goes on to authentic Argelia where there are still more horses than cars and the traditional way of life has been preserved far from modern city. Here you can enjoy village life and the hospitality in a charming family-run hotel.

Day 8: Southeast Antioquia: Paisa Culture and Andin Paramo de Sónson

On the last day of your roundtrip you will visit some other beautiful waterfalls and bathe in their refreshing waters. You will leave Argelia before noon and visit the small town of Sonson and its historical, colonial center with beautiful façades and balconies. You can either go on a walk through the centre or on a hike to a view point and visit some more falls. In the evening you will start the trip back home to Medellin where you will arrive relaxed and full of memories of an awesome Colombian adventure.
