Abstract

The Lost City was discovered in 1976 by a group of archaeologists from the Colombian Institute of Anthropology. Recent archaeological research in 2006 indicates that this city was founded around 660 A.D. and was abandoned between 1550 to 1600 A.D. It is one of the most important cities of the 250 Tayrona villages discovered in the north part of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. In the surrounding areas, 26 villages were found, and in some of these sites archaeological excavations were carried out. It is located between 900 to 1200 meters above sea level on the heights of the Cerro Correa in the northern part of the Sierra Nevada. The city has construction systems, cobbled roads, stairs, and walls linked by a series of terraces and platforms where they built ceremonial centres and homes.

Experience this unique adventure and hike up to the Lost City with professional guides: Cross tropical rivers, enjoy nature, sleep in traditional hammocks and explore this trail, which is far more interesting than the Machu Pichu trek.

Itinerary

Day 1: Beginning of the adventure (L, D)

Early in the morning, you start to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park by jeep within three hours to the town called Machete Pelao. After a light lunch in the village, you walk for 30 minutes to a natural pool where you can take a refreshing bath. From this point, it takes about three hours to reach the Alfredo hut where you will spend the first night in hammocks with mosquito nets and wool blankets. Enjoy a full meal and before going to sleep the guide gives you a briefing about the next day.

Day 2: Hiking up to the Buritaca River (B, L, D)

Today, depending on the temperature and the information your guide gave the night before, get up on time to eat breakfast and get ready to start walking towards the second hut. Depending on the time of year and the stars, we can visit the town Kogui Mutanzi. They still live a traditional way of life, protecting their culture and beliefs. After a short break meeting them (if possible), you continue the walk for three hours to reach the second hut, and at this place you will find the river Buritaca, where you have some time to go swimming in beautiful surroundings before having lunch. After walking for about 4 hours you arrive at the hut Mamo Romualdo, where you will have dinner.

Day 3: Exploring the Lost City (B, L, D)

On the third day you will reach Lost City, located 1200 meters above sea level. After climbing 1200 steps to get there, you will get to know a culture that managed to hide from the Spanish invaders. For about three hours, the guide will give information about the buildings, culture and the way of life of the indigenous people who used to live there. Leaving the site you will walk back to the second hut where you will spend the third and last night.

Day 4: Return to Santa Marta (B, L)

The final day starts early as you return to Mamey, walking for about 6 or 7 hours. From there, a special lunch will be prepared and you will have to say goodbye to your fellow travelers. The jeep will be waiting to bring you back again to Santa Marta between 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
