Abstract

Santa Fé de Antioquia is located only a two-hour ride through scenic mountain landscapes of the Western Andean highlands from Medellín. The town was founded in 1541 on the Western bank of the Cauca River and became the first capital of Antioquia in 1584. It is declared a Cultural Heritage Village thanks to its colonial architecture with many historic churches, plazas and monuments. Furthermore, the village of Santa Fé is known for its unique jewellery - the Filigree technique -  a delicate kind of jewellery metalwork, usually of gold or silver, arranged in artistic motifs. The technique was originally brought to Santa Fé de Antioquia by Spanish colonists, and some local families have practiced it for generations. During the process the goldsmith melts the precious metal to turn it into threads, then these threads are made into finer threads, the process is repeated several times, until the thread is thin enough. Silver or gold threads are woven, giving the typical shapes of filigree, that will make them beautiful earrings, bracelets, rings, and pendants.

Explore the cultural and arquitectonic treasures of Santa Fé de Antioquia. Get to know the history of the oldest town of Antiquia and be impressed by the complexity of its colonial centre. Locals call it the Cartagena of Antioquia due to the conservation of colonial architecture. Experience a private visit in an artisanal manufactory of silver & gold jewellery.  Discover the impressive cañons of the Cauca river visiting the well-known bridge “Puente del Occidente” considered one of the longest suspension bridges in the world.

Look forward to experiencing stunning landscapes, colonial vibes in the streets of Santa Fé, typical Colombian food and a relaxing day in the countryside. Furthermore, support local families and their jewellery traditions.
